article “Death penalty ‘more likely’ for dodgy looking men”

A 14 December 2023 article in The Times of London reported on a US study which found that

“Murderers who look untrustworthy get harsher sentences … The results imply, the authors said, that facial stereotypes could be leading to hidden biases across the criminal justice system … The study … took advantage of a database containing mugshots of 400 men convicted of first degree murder, half of whom had been sentenced to death and half who had been given life sentences … More than a thousand volunteers were asked to judge the trustworthiness of the men’s faces, without knowing anything about the men’s fates. When the scientists analysed the results, they found that the less trustworthy faces — from men with, for instance, downturned lips and angry eyebrows — belonged to men who were more likely to have been executed.”

This example points to the clear risks of negative stereotyping.

The Training Institute’s Pennsylvania Evaluation Project – Joe Osburn 

I am reading through the volume of papers from the May 2023 festschrift honoring the life and work of Dr. Wolfensberger, which is now available for purchase from Valor Press. Chapter six on the Pennsylvania Evaluation Project is a must read for PASSING report writers, assistant team leaders, team leaders and floaters, as well as those organizing PASSING workshops and/or real assessments. Osburn provides valuable insight into the development of the PASSING tool as well as considerations for planning and conducting real assessments. He underscores the importance of writing reports. All in all, the chapter delivers many relevant lessons for leadership development in SRV and PASSING.

Festschrift for Dr. Wolfensberger

Last week we celebrated the publication of a festschrift for Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger. The celebration was held at his archives in the McGoogan library at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Eleven papers were presented on various aspects of Wolfensberger’s life and work; these and other papers have been gathered in a book which will be published soon by Valor Press. Video presentations by the chapter authors will also be released soon on the Wolf Wolfensberger website.

3rd and final day of the distance SRV conference

The third and final day of plenary talks and concurrent sessions at the First International Social Role Valorization Distance Conference: SRV in the World provided a wonderful capstone to our time together learning about and discussing SRV and related ideas. Now is the time to go back and watch or re-watch any of the plenary or concurrent session videos. Stay in touch with each other, especially new connections made in the Expo rooms. Share what you learned with others who were not at the conference. And let’s start looking forward to the next time!

A Brief Primer on Social Role Valorization

The preconference workshop on February 21 is a brief overview of Social Role Valorization, intended as a primer for those interested in attending the International SRV Conference from February 22-24, and want some basic information on the topic. It will also be a useful refresher for those who have studied SRV. Topics covered are social devaluation and how it is made manifest in people’s lives, the importance of valued social roles in assisting people to experience the available ‘good things of life,’ and the ten themes whereby SRV is expressed. The session is presented by Jo Massarelli, Director of The SRV Implementation Project based in Worcester, Massachusetts US. Jo worked closely with Dr. Wolf Wolfensberger. She has taught workshops with him across the globe, and is an associate of the Training Institute in Syracuse, New York. Jo is also a founding member of the North American SRV Council and the International SRV Association.
